Computer test for Alzheimers

A new computerised “fitness” test for the brain, developed at the University of Tennessee, is reported to be 95 percent effective in detecting Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of cognitive problems. Other diagnostic tests currently in use are reported have only 69 to 71 percent accuracy. Developers say 60 percent of cases of the disease are not picked up in a primary care setting, leading to missed opportunities for early diagnosis.

Families of dementia sufferers struggling to cope

Home Instead Senior Care, an organisation dedicated to providing in-home care for the elderly, says it has seen a 25 percent increase in past 12 months in requests from families of Alzheimer’s sufferers asking for additional care to that provided by local District Health Boards.
