Soo Bool Sunim smiles broadly and asks, “Can you see your own eyes?” This is not a question that has ever occurred to me, but now it becomes troubling as I turn it around in my head, looking for an angle into it, and wondering whether there is an answer at all. Or even if that is really the question. This bewilderment is what Zen masters can do to decades of logic the conscious mind has laid down. There's no correct answer of course, but that doesn’t stop a few us here in his home-cum-temple retreat in suburban Seoul having a stab – and Soo enjoying our weakly rhetorical answers. Kate Frost The Palace was built in 1921 by the Maharaja of Mysore to host his most important guest, the Viceroy of India. It is a shimmering white palace built in the splendid Italianate palazzo style, double-columned and domed, set in sprawling terraced and landscaped gardens. The Lalitha Mahal is now one of India's most opulent hotels and so it should be as it was a real Maharaja's palace

Lucio pauses mid-stride as he passes my table and then – perhaps because he can recognise the colour and bouquet, or maybe he cheated and peaked at my order – says enthusiastically, “Ah, but you are drinking a wine from my region, Liguria”. He claps his hands gently then stares at me for a moment. What happens next is beyond cheating and peaking: “But you are my friend from New Zealand,” he says as if we have known each other a lifetime. I had only been to Lucio Galletto's restaurant in Sydney's Paddington once before and that had been at least six months previous. Either Lucio had a remarkable memory or I stood out in a crowd, because on that occasion I had been with a large group of artists and gallery patrons. Frances Garland Twenty years ago my son set off for his big OE. From Egypt he sent me a postcard with the only words - 'diarrhoea - gotta go'!!!!! Remembering these words and taking no chances, I equipped myself with the appropriate medication and boarded motor coach no 16 - Mercedes Benz of Arabia, no Lawrence in sight. Started our three hour police-escorted convoy towards the famous Pyramids of Giza. |

Graham Reid The night train from Paris to Venice was about to leave when I heard the noise in the corridor outside my sleeper: loud American voices and the banging of baggage against the carriage walls. A woman carrying a small child and a large suitcase, and an older woman who was obviously her mother, appeared at my door. The older woman was also laden with luggage. They hauled their heavy cases inside and only then spotted me sitting in the corner. They were alarmed. This was a six-bed sleeper and they assumed they would have it to themselves...

We were met along the road by a parade and plenty of noise with women in their new saris and cows painted yellow. We were told it was a farmers' festival when the gods were asked for protection from bad weather and infestations, and for good crops. It was rather strange to see all the cows painted yellow and decorated with flowers. It was very entertaining, but we did wonder how the animals felt being painted yellow. |

I was stunned at the growth and sophistication of Shanghai. Shanghai is very city, reminiscent of New York with a touch of Tudor England, beautifully planted in parts with plane trees (I think) planted by the white Russian settlers long ago. |

...we jumped on the shuttle bus and headed to the port town of Limassol. The first thing we noticed – dust; on the drab and unkempt buildings, on cars, streets, on tables, on everything you touched. |
